Modelling squat Markermeer

Markermeer

By 'Rijkswaterstaat Directie IJsselmeergebied' the vessel the Markermeer is used for depth measurements in the Keteldiep. Because of the cleaning up of the polluted bottom it is important that the depth measurements are as accurate as possible. From different investigations it appears that the squat is one of the most important error source.

The squat is the sinkage of a vessel caused by the depth of the waterway and it's speed. On board of the Marker is the Rwslod-measurement systeem in which a squatmodel is implemented. This model has been optimized with measurements. In the figure below a squatmodel has been given as a function of the Froude-number, a function of the speed of the vessel and the depth of the waterway. The squat measurements are give in red, the calculations of the model in blue and green.

Squatmodel Markermeer

The squat can be more than 0.4 metre!

An extensive report is given in 'Modellering squat Markermeer' (july 1998).

After the optimalization of the Markermeer the Westergat has been optimized
